Downtown Evansville – The Hub Within the Hub

Evansville has been an economic, commercial, and cultural hub since the early 1800’s – which makes Downtown Evansville the “hub within the hub”!

First things first, which part of town is officially considered to be Downtown?

Ask the locals, and they’ll tell you that Downtown Evansville sits south of the Lloyd Expressway, north of Canal Street, with a great view of the Ohio River to the southeast. Downtown Evansville has sat on the banks of the Ohio River ever since it was first established, but as the area thrived over the years, it has expanded.

What makes this area so vibrant?

If you’re into performing arts, you’ll love having an apartment in or near Downtown Evansville. That’s because this area is home to Victory Theatre (the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra), The Old National Events Plaza (an auditorium and convention center that hosts a variety of concerts and plays), the Ford Center (an arena that’s home to minor league basketball and hockey teams, along with concerts), along with several different museums.

Or, if you want to try your luck, head to Tropicana Evansville – a casino that’s an entertainment district in itself, complete with hotel rooms, restaurants, and shops.

The best way to enjoy Downtown Evansville’s culture is to spend your time on Main Street. Along this tree-lined street, you’ll find cuisine from every corner of the world, small shops and boutiques, art galleries, bars and clubs, festivals, and, of course, a fabulous view of the Ohio River.

If you really want to soak up the local flavor, spend your Friday mornings at the Downtown Evansville Farmers Market. Held every Friday from the middle of May to the beginning of October, the market is home to local produce, herbs, cheeses, wines, baked goods, and homemade sauces.

While Downtown Evansville always seems to be growing and improving, the area also pays homage to the past. Take a walk through Downtown Evansville, and you’ll find buildings that have stood for more than a century. For example, Kunkel Square was one of the very first skyscrapers in the region, while the Montgomery Ward Building was originally home to a department store and now sits on the National Registry of Historic Places. There are also a number of historic churches scattered throughout the area.

Renting an apartment in Downtown Evansville also means you’ll be close to a number of job opportunities. This area is home to both city and county government offices, and it’s the corporate home of Mead Johnson, Old National Bank, Berry Plastics, and Vectren Corporation. You’ll find a number of thriving businesses right on Main Street.

Bottom line – if you want to take advantage of everything that Evansville has to offer, get an apartment downtown!
